Resveratrol is a bioactive compound in many foods. Since its anticancer activity was reported in 1997, its health benefits have been intensively investigated. Resveratrol is a compound present in grapes. It is most well-known for its presence in red wine. 7,8-dihydroxyflavone (7,8-DHF) is a synthetic flavonoid that was initially discovered in a study screening for small molecules that could activate a particular receptor known as tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB), because the peptide produced in the human body that acts on this receptor, called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), could not be used due to poor absorption into the brain. 7,8-DHF was found to be a potent mimic of BDNF able to act on TrkB in a similar manner. This means that 7,8-DHF could theoretically cause similar effects as BDNF in the brain, and in theory be more therapeutically useful due to its better absorption and ability to cross the blood-brain barrier.

More than 1,000 studies, including animal and human clinical trials, have been conducted on PQQ to measure its effectiveness and safety. A randomized, placebo-controlled, and double-blinded study on 41 healthy elderly subjects who were each administered 20 mg/d of the ingredient for 12 weeks. The study showed significant improvements in subjects administered PQQ based on assessments measuring selective attention and visual-spatial cognitive functioning. Another eight-week study on 17 adult female subjects administered 20 mg of PQQ daily showed significant improvements in measurements for vigor, fatigue, tension-anxiety, depression, anger-hostility, and confusion.
